さつき会について

さつき会の今日まで

戦後間もなく日本からの駐在員夫人の数もまだ少なく、慣れぬ土地でそれぞれが心細い思いをしていた頃、料理の講習を中心とした日系人の小さなグループがありました。このグループの中から駐在員夫人が当地の生活を少しでも楽しく、有意義に過ごすことが出来る様に、アメリカの文化・習慣に接する機会を持つような会をつくってはとの気運が盛り上がってきました。

当時、YWCAの幹部役員として活躍しておられた大沼、岡本夫人の援助の下に駐在員側からは柴田、浦野夫人が中心となり、YWCAの活動の一つの会として、1957年5月8日に発会式が行われこの月の名に因んで「さつき会」と名付けられました。　発足当時の会員数は51名、会合は月2回もたれ、ゴルフ、ブリッジ、英語の同好会がうまれました。　翌年には「さつき会会則」もでき、さつき会会員は同時にYWCA会員であることが明記されました。　総領事夫人を名誉会長に迎え、さつき会会員はYWCAの奉仕活動に協力すると共にYWCAの要望に応えて茶の湯、生花など日本の文化紹介を目的とした同好会も生まれ、またYWCAの様々な企画に参加するという密接な関係を保ちながら10余年を過ごしました。

1970年YWCAの移転を機に、1971年5月非営利団体「SATSUKI-KAI, INC.」として正式に独立しました。　また1997年には米国政府より非営利団体の認証を受けました。

現在さつき会は、日米文化交流を通じて両国の理解・親善を深めると共に、会員相互の親睦をはかることを目的とし、会員は本会の目的に賛同する人々からなっています。年間の活動は総会、新年会、美術・麻雀・読書会・食の会・百人一首などの同好会、シニアセンター・老人ホーム訪問、被災地等へのチャリティー支援、SF桜祭り・ミルブレー日本文化祭りなどのベイエリアのコミュニティーイベントなどへの参加、ジャパンソサエティ・SFアジア美術館などとの協力による日本文化交流プログラム、被災地へのチャリティー活動など多岐に渡っています。

SATSUKI KAI, Inc., History and Activities

Following the end of WWII, amongst the restoration of international relations between the United States and Japan, Japanese ladies accompanied their husbands as Japanese companies returned to San Francisco for new opportunities – for most of these wives, this was their first time outside of their home country. Having been thrown into an unfamiliar environment with minimal knowledge of local customs and the English language, the Japanese ladies conceived strong interests in American culture as well as introducing Japanese traditions to the Bay Area community.

With the support of the local ladies of the San Francisco YM-YWCA, a group of Japanese ladies successfully launched a cultural exchange organization on May 1, 1957. A week later (May 8, 1957), the organization adopted the named “SATSUKI KAI” and would proceed to run projects in affiliate with the YM-YWCA. Following the relocation of the YM-YWCA building in May 1971, Satsuki Kai reestablished themselves as an independent non-profit organization, “SATSUKI KAI, Inc.”.

From the initial launch of Satsuki Kai, the wives of the Consul Generals of Japan have served as Honorary Presidents of the organization, each contributing significantly and leaving lasting legacies.

To date, Satsuki Kai continues to pursue their original goal of promoting cultural exchange between the United States and Japan. Satsuki Kai offers programs in partnership with the Asian Art Museum, introducing Japanese artists to present their crafts through demonstrations and workshops for the Bay Area community. In addition, Satsuki Kai also provides programs for senior centers such as the Hamilton Senior Center and Kimochi Homes in San Francisco and San Mateo, as well as for children with special needs including PARCA Summer Programs.

Satsuki Kai participates in cultural events such as Millbrae Japanese Culture Festival, Hakone Garden Summer Festival,  Holiday at Filoli ( Filoli Historic House and Garden). Satsuki Kai has also been actively donating to Bay Area and global causes, including Victims of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, Doctors without Borders, Victims of the North California Fires (in collaboration with Hands On San Francisco), Kimochi Home and Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Farm Colony.

Satsuki Kai holds regular recreational programs such as Chorus, Hyakunin Isshu, and Calligraphy, as well as occasional workshops in Kimono Dressing, Tea Ceremony, Flower Arrangement, and Cooking.

Programs are open to all members, families and friends.
